? What advantages do inverter compressors have

25.09.2020

What is an inverter compressor? Why purchase an inverter compressor? What advantages do inverter compressors have over constant speed compressors? Answers to all these questions and more can be found in the following article.

Let’s start at the beginning. What is an inverter—variable speed—technology compressor?

For many factories, the air compressor is a necessary machine for the proper, continuous operation of the production machines. At the same time, the compressor is the largest energy consumer in the factory.
The question arises: how can we make the compressor’s work more efficient, in order to achieve the lowest possible energy consumption, while at the same time maintain maximum air output? This figure seems obvious; however, it is actually conditional and affected by many different factors.

Air consumption in the factory is not constant; if so, why should the compressor always provide the same amount of air?

Air consumption in the factory piping varies at different times throughout the day. Machines and air consumers go on and off; various devices are started and stopped; all affect air consumption and consequently line pressure. Standard compressors with constant drive have difficulty dealing with these changes and therefore wasteful of energy, as a result of frequent transitions from idle to compression, instead of keeping steady pressure and changing motor revolutions only. Therefore, it seems natural that the compressor should know how to adjust the amount of air it supplies to actual consumption, and this is where the inverter comes into play. The inverter knows how to change the rotational speed of the motor according to actual air consumption, and thus enable maximum energy efficiency in any state, at any time.

So, how much can be saved?

The obvious need is to maintain constant, steady pressure in the line in order to maximize energy savings; hence, the need for the inverter – speed variator.
Inverter compressors regulate themselves according to changes in pressure in the line; thus, it enables electricity saving of up to 50% in EL+ Series compressors, compared to compressors without inverter control.

Additional advantages of a compressor with inverter-based control, manufactured by EL-AV Compressors:

  • Reduced wear – since inverter compressors work in such a way that the load is reduced and steady, this reduces the amount of malfunctions associated with bearings, shafts and other moving parts, as opposed to compressors with constant drive, in which the load on these components is high while working at high speeds and with frequent starts, resulting in accelerated wear.
  • Variable speed fan – the inverter controller installed in the compressors of EL-AV Compressors also enables the cooling fan to change its rotational speed according to the oil temperature, to maintain an ideal working temperature of 80°C to 85°C even in very tough ambient conditions. This enables further savings in energy, and ensures that the compressor will work at an ideal temperature.
  • Built-in smart controller – our company’s variable speed compressors include a programmable controller (PLC) and HMI touch screen for controlling and monitoring compressor functioning. The smart control enables continuous tracking of compressor activity, and communication with a central control system based on all types of common communication protocols.
  • Broad working range – EL+ Series compressors have an especially broad working range of 20% to 100%. If consumption in the plant drops significantly, such a broad working range enables a 50 hp compressor to work and consume electricity like a 10 hp compressor, thus ensuring maximum energy savings.
